The Abode of the Message is a spiritual community founded in 1975 by Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. His father, Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan brought a Sufi Message of unity from the east in 1910, which was intended to help “unite humanity in brotherhood and wisdom.” The Abode is the primary residential community of the Sufi Order International. The Abode is dedicated to honoring the unity, truth and wisdom of all the world’s religious traditions. Located in historic Shaker buildings on over 400 acres of natural beauty, the Abode is a Residential Spiritual Community, conference and retreat center, as well as a school of esoteric study. We offer a wide variety of workshops, programs, personal and group retreats, weekly classes, worship services, daily prayers and evenings of music, poetry and dance, providing vast opportunities for the spiritual seeker to explore, deepen and unfold on the spiritual path. We invite you to join us in our ongoing commitment to serve those seeking to enrich and transform life through spiritual practice.

An Icon of Noor-un-nisa Inayat Khan, executed in the Mediæval Russian-Byzantine manner by Yasodhara Sandy Lillydahl, commissioned by Mumtaz Kammerer and presented to the Abode of the Message in honor of his father, Clarence W. Kammerer Sr. April 2009

Noor-un-nisa was born in Russia in 1914, the daughter of Hazrat Inayat Khan and his wife Ora Ray (Amina Begum). She was raised in a deeply spiritual family with her sister Khair-un-nisa (Claire) and her two brothers, Vilayat and Hidayat. As she matured, she became an accomplished musician and a writer of stories for children.
Noor, along with her mother, sister, and Vilayat, barely escaped the Nazi occupation of France, leaving for England on the last boat from Normandy.

There was a burst of activity toward the end of last year at the Abode’s mountaintop Sanctuary area, where a new complex of sculptural installations is being built, collectively named The Temple of the Elements. When complete, there will be five strikingly unique outdoor stations, each representing one of the alchemical elements of Nature: Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Ether. Two longtime core members of the Abode Community have been instrumental in pushing forward construction, Richard Hohlstein and Maharaji Hess...

A Weekend of Work, Closeness and Fun

Barnraising at the Abode:
Memorial Day Weekend brought cross-country volunteers

Gene drove up from Florida; Ian flew in from Seattle. More than fifty volunteers, skilled and unskilled, came with willing hands and hearts to help restore the Abode's Shaker Barn. The Abode received a grant from the State of New York that requires matching funds either in cash or in sweat equity in order to be activated.

We had both.

Five Year Grant Received for Fund RaisingFive Year Grant Received for Fund Raising

Thanks to a generous five year grant the Abode will, for the first time, have the ongoing services of a professional grant writer and fund raiser. This will help the Abode secure these increasingly important sources of revenue for maintaining and upgrading its historic facilities, and continuing its work. Our deep appreciation goes to Carl Rosenstock for his dedication and perseverance in facilitating the award of this grant...
