The Abode of the Message is a spiritual community founded in 1975 by Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. His father, Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan brought a Sufi Message of unity from the east in 1910, which was intended to help “unite humanity in brotherhood and wisdom.” The Abode is the primary residential community of the Sufi Order International. The Abode is dedicated to honoring the unity, truth and wisdom of all the world’s religious traditions. Located in historic Shaker buildings on over 400 acres of natural beauty, the Abode is a Residential Spiritual Community, conference and retreat center, as well as a school of esoteric study. We offer a wide variety of workshops, programs, personal and group retreats, weekly classes, worship services, daily prayers and evenings of music, poetry and dance, providing vast opportunities for the spiritual seeker to explore, deepen and unfold on the spiritual path. We invite you to join us in our ongoing commitment to serve those seeking to enrich and transform life through spiritual practice.

EMERALD EARTH RETREAT

Harvesting the Fruits of Awakening

October 30 and 31, 2010 at the Abode of the Message

A Ziraat Retreat with Sharifa Norton & Muinuddin Smith

Thou kneadest my clay, I know, to make a new universe. - Hazrat Inayat Khan

In this weekend retreat, in the beauty of the Berkshire mountains in autumn, we will share in deep practices for cultivating the natural self, exploring the alchemy of the soul’s journey, and orienting more clearly to our unfolding purpose. Attuning to Sophia, the sacred wisdom of the earth, and drawing upon the profound Ziraat teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan, we will explore the stages and dynamic processes of cultivation. These teachings provide a code on how to do our work, to fully till the field of our being, and to bring the seeds of our ideals into manifestation. Restoring our intimacy with the sacredness of all of life, we participate in serving an earth of beauty, and realize that in this service is perfect freedom.

Fulfilling the Pledge Ramadhan Retreat

Labor Day Weekend - September 3 - 6, 2010
at the Abode of the Message, New Lebanon, New York

with Imam Salim and Tara Chishti

"Am I not your Lord who cherishes and sustains you?"-

They said: "Yes! We do testify!" -Quran 7:172

In a time before time we pleged our sacred bond with the creator of all things. Ramadhan is part of fulfilling that pledge, taking time out of our lives to exist in remembrance of our lord and of that pledge. During this retreat we will gather together to experience the deep sacred meanings and message of Ramadhan.

Cluck!Cluck!

Newest Abode residents are not easily ruffled.

Recent visitors to the Abode have needed to drive carefully, as they are greeted by a flock of chickens making themselves very much at home on the lawns and driveways, engaging inthe time-honored chicken imperative of crossing the road. Eleven Buff Orpington hens, “The girls,” as they are called, are the first part of a project begun by resident Liz McIlvaine. She expects to increase the flock in the coming years to provide the Abode both with free range eggs and natural fertilizer for the farm.

Barn Again!Barn Again!

Barnraisers return to the Abode

to continue restoration of our Shaker barn.

Glad that's done! Our Memorial Day “Barnraising” event brought with it such a sense of accomplishment and wealth of camaraderie that many of the nearly fifty participants were exited to return on the Columbus Day weekend to continue the work. Once again the weather cooperated with our plans. Brisk early autumn days welcomed a slightly smaller group to continue the work begun in May.

An Icon of Noor-un-nisa Inayat Khan, executed in the Mediæval Russian-Byzantine manner by Yasodhara Sandy Lillydahl, commissioned by Mumtaz Kammerer and presented to the Abode of the Message in honor of his father, Clarence W. Kammerer Sr. April 2009

Noor-un-nisa was born in Russia in 1914, the daughter of Hazrat Inayat Khan and his wife Ora Ray (Amina Begum). She was raised in a deeply spiritual family with her sister Khair-un-nisa (Claire) and her two brothers, Vilayat and Hidayat. As she matured, she became an accomplished musician and a writer of stories for children.
Noor, along with her mother, sister, and Vilayat, barely escaped the Nazi occupation of France, leaving for England on the last boat from Normandy.
